The F/A-18E/F is an advanced multirole aircraft developed by McDonnell Douglas based on the F/A-18C/D Hornet. F/A-18E/F is a general term for this series, consisting of the single-seat F/A-18E and the two-seat F/A-18F.
The F/A-18E/F is a fighter-attack aircraft (multirole aircraft) classified as a 4.5 generation jet fighter. Following the cancellation of the A-12 development, it was developed by completely redesigning the basic design of the existing F/A-18 (AD type). Design changes were made to improve range and weapons payload capacity, and to increase the size of the airframe and to consider stealth capabilities. Deliveries to the U.S. Navy began in 1999, and in 2001, the F/A-18E/F achieved IOC (Initial Operational Capability). Deployment proceeded as a replacement for the U.S. Navy's F-14 Fleet Air Defense Fighter (carrier-based fighter), and it participated in combat, including the Iraq War.
