The G17 series was born in Austria in the early 1980s and is said to have revolutionized the design philosophy of automatic pistols.

Model number "17" is the standard model. "18C" is a fully automatic model exclusively for the military and law enforcement agencies. "19" is a compact model with improved portability, and there are also a variety of other variations subdivided according to caliber, size, and function.
