■ Description
One of the world's first operational supersonic fighters, the F-104, was developed in the 1950s by the U.S. Air Force's "Century Series" group of fighters. From training with the MiG-15 during the Korean War, the U.S. Air Force sought fighters with small but powerful jet engines that increased mobility and speed, and the shape of its small, rectangular main wings in a thin hull resembled that of a missile. From this shape, it was also known in Japan as the "Last Manned Fighter". The F-104C was used as a forward fighter, while the earlier A/B (Hard Point Military Station) was increasingly used as a fighter bomber.
