About the Iranian Air Force F-14A
In the Iranian Empire before 1978, the then-king Pahlavi II sought military superiority in the Middle East region and, due to his vigilance against neighboring Soviet Union, purchased a large number of land and air weapons from Western countries using so-called "oil money." Following the F-4D, the F-4E was purchased, and then in 1974, a contract for the purchase of the F-14A was made, and 79 F-14As were delivered to Iran between 1976 and 1978. With the Iranian Revolution in February 1979, Pahlavi II abdicated, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which had strong anti-American sentiments, was established, the United States imposed an arms embargo, and subsequent supplies, including replacement parts, were cut off. However, despite suffering from a decrease in operational aircraft, both types of aircraft participated in the Iran-Iraq War that began in 1980. The F-14A is still confirmed to be operational today.
