■Product Description
The Type 21, the early production model of the "Zero Fighter," played a remarkable role in the early stages of the war. It fought valiantly in the air operations "Operation I" in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. This operation took place from April 7th to 15th, 1943, with aircraft from the aircraft carriers Zuikaku, Junyo, and Hiyo, as well as land-based air units, sortieing jointly. Since Mitsubishi had finished production of the Type 21 in June 1942, it is believed that most of the Zero Fighter Type 21s that participated in this operation were manufactured by Nakajima.
Nakajima Aircraft began mass production of the Zero Fighter in November 1941. A characteristic of Nakajima-made aircraft is that the spinner is more pointed compared to the Mitsubishi-made version, and from the time of manufacture, the protruding mass balance on the ailerons is not equipped. Furthermore, although the aircraft paint scheme was the same as the Mitsubishi-made version, from around the summer of 1942, Nakajima-made aircraft began to have a white border painted on the Hinomaru (rising sun) on the fuselage.
This kit reproduces the differences between these manufacturers, with the canopy frame and transparent part being separate parts, and the rear half of the fuselage being a single piece made using slide molding. Markings can be reproduced for aircraft on the aircraft carriers Junyo and Hiyo, as well as the light gray 202nd Air Group aircraft.
