Modelsbit is pleased to announce a new product: the 1/72 Mirage G8.02 prototype single-seat variable-sweep wing interceptor. The Mirage G8 was an interceptor designed and manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France in the 1960s. The production model was planned to be equipped with two M53 engines, but the prototype was built with an Atar 9K50. The first prototype (G8.01) made its maiden flight in May 1971, and the second prototype (G8.02) recorded Mach 2.34 in 1973, the fastest in Europe at the time. However, the project was canceled due to soaring costs caused by the complexity of the variable-sweep wing mechanism and the worsening economic situation due to the first oil crisis.
The kit reproduces the single-seat G8.02 with newly molded parts. The kit includes injection-molded plastic AS-37 Martel anti-radar missiles and pylons (x 2), photo-etched parts and painting mask stickers, two types of canopies (open/closed), and one type of Cartograf decal for the French Air Force. The wings can be displayed in either fully extended or stowed position. When completed, the aircraft will have a total length of approximately 280mm and a wingspan (with wings fully extended) of approximately 213mm.
