Michael Whiddett, also known as "Mad Mike," is a New Zealand racing driver and drift master renowned worldwide. He often favors Mazda cars, especially those with rotary engines (RE), as partners for his radical driving style, and has finally created his own original RE-powered car. This Hot Wheels model is based on his original car, the MADAZ (a play on words with MAD and MAZDA) 787D. The MADAZ 787D's body is designed as an homage to the 787B, the car that gave Mazda its first victory at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans, the first Japanese car and the first with a rotary engine. The body is mounted on a stainless steel tube chassis manufactured by TRA Kyoto in Japan. The engine is a 5-rotor engine with the largest displacement ever for a rotary engine (approximately 3.3 liters), mounted in the front-mid position. The actual car was just unveiled at an event held in New Zealand in December 2023, meaning the Hot Wheels model was announced before the actual car.
