The ship was laid down in June 2010, christened and launched on May 7, 2011, Lieutenant Commander Murphy's birthday, by his mother, Maureen Murphy, and commissioned in October 2012. In February 2014, when the Canadian Navy supply ship USS Protecteur caught fire in the waters northeast of Pearl Harbor, the USS Michael Murphy was dispatched to provide assistance. In recognition of this contribution, the ship was awarded the Canadian Military Commendation in May 2015. In April 2026, she participated in mine-clearing operations in the Arabian Gulf alongside the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen, clearing mines laid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The USS Michael Murphy is a highly versatile Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer equipped with an advanced Aegis system, capable of handling various operations including air defense, anti-submarine, anti-ship, and land attack. It is also a Flight IIA ship with improved helicopter operational capabilities.
