In 1939, the United States Army Air Corps presented specifications for \"Plan 40C,\" a development plan for an interceptor fighter that would meet three conditions: \"low air resistance,\" \"good forward visibility,\" and \"powerful armament,\" in order to break the limitations of propeller-driven aircraft. Of the eight aircraft manufacturers that submitted proposals, three companies, including Curtiss-Wright's XP-55 (internal development name Cw 24), won prototype contracts. This aircraft had a unique shape with a single pusher-type propeller engine located at the rear of the fuselage, a canard near the nose, and swept wings. The landing gear was the first tricycle type for a Curtiss-Wright military aircraft. However, the Army was not keen on adopting the aircraft, and initially only ordered the production of ground test models and wind tunnel test models, stating that the order for prototype aircraft would depend on the results. Therefore, Curtiss-Wright built a full-scale flight test aircraft (internal designation Cw 24-B) at its own expense, and after conducting tests from December 1941, it was finally in July 1942 that the Army placed an order for three prototype aircraft, designated as the XP-55.
