The aircraft made its first flight in 1963 and was produced in the UK until 1984, after which it was license-produced in Romania until 1989, with a total of 244 aircraft being made. The first production model, the -200, had 79 seats, but the -500 series, produced from 1967, had its fuselage extended by approximately 4.5 meters, resulting in 119 seats.
