The M3 half-track is an armored half-track for troop transport developed by the US military, based on the M2 which was developed during World War II to tow 105mm howitzers. The M3, which was standardized in August 1940, had an extended rear troop compartment for infantry transport and the ammunition boxes were eliminated, increasing the crew capacity from 10 on the M2 to 13. The movable rails for machine guns that were installed all around the troop compartment of the M2 were eliminated, and instead a machine gun mounting support was installed in the center of the rear troop compartment. Later, an improved version was developed to enhance the M3's self-defense capabilities, featuring an M49 ring-mounted machine gun mount on the upper right side of the cockpit, and was officially adopted as the M3A1. 12,499 M3s and 2,862 M3A1s were produced.
