■Product Description
FV221 Caernarfon
After the end of World War II, Western nations were shocked by the Soviet Union's new heavy tank, the IS-3, with its cutting-edge silhouette and massive gun.
In Britain, concerns spread that the Centurion, the main battle tank at the time, would not be able to penetrate the armor of this tank, and there was a need for the rapid development of a new heavy tank to counter the IS-3.
Therefore, Britain decided to counter the IS-3 by developing the heavy tank FV201, whose development plan had been frozen.
However, a new problem arose.
It was anticipated that mounting a large-caliber turret on the FV201 chassis would result in a weight exceeding 60 tons, but Britain had little experience operating tanks of such weight, so they decided to first collect data using a test vehicle.
Based on the FV201 chassis, a test vehicle equipped with a 20-pounder tank gun (=Centurion turret) was named "FV221 Caernarvon," and about 10 units were produced.
Caernarvon underwent test operations in various locations and played a major role in the development of the "FV214 Conqueror."
