■Product Description
The Chikugo-class destroyer escort was a destroyer escort (DE) designed for regional fleets, based on the previous Isuzu-class, and 11 ships of this class were built. While keeping the cost of the ships down for the purpose of deploying a large number of ships to regional fleets, it was equipped with powerful anti-submarine armament, including ASROC anti-submarine missiles, low-frequency bow sonar, and variable depth sonar (VDS), and this class was the smallest ship type to be equipped with ASROC.
The bridge structure is large for this class because the combat compartments such as the Combat Information Center (CIC), sonar room, and anti-submarine command room are concentrated there. Also, knuckles were installed on the bow side to prevent wave spray, similar to the larger Minegumo-class.
The first ship, Chikugo, entered service on July 31, 1971, and was deployed to the Sasebo District Fleet along with its sister ship, Mikuma. Subsequently, the "Chikugo" was decommissioned in April 1996, and the "Mikuma" in July 1997, with all ships of the same class being decommissioned by 2003.
