■Product Description
DE-261 "Wakaba" is the only destroyer in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force that operated a former Imperial Japanese Navy vessel. Its predecessor, the Tachibana-class destroyer Nashi, was sunk in the Seto Inland Sea in July 1945 by an attack from American carrier-based aircraft. After the war, it was salvaged in 1954 and restoration work was completed in May 1956. It was recommissioned as a patrol ship for the newly established Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
Initially, it was operated as an unarmed training ship, but later modifications equipped it with a 76mm twin gun and Hedgehog anti-submarine missile launchers. In 1960, it was fitted with the SPS-8B high-angle measuring radar, which became the only such equipment on a destroyer, on its bridge, and it served as an experimental ship in the Practical Experimentation Unit (now the Development Group) until it was decommissioned in 1971.
