■ Description
The Buckley-class destroyer was a small destroyer operated by the U.S. Navy from 1943, primarily engaged in anti-submarine missions such as convoy escorts and anti-submarine patrols. To compensate for the shortage of diesel engines, turbo-electric propulsion was employed and 154 were built, the largest number of U.S. destroyer escorts. Of these, 102 were operated by the U.S. Navy, 46 were transferred to the U.S. Navy, and six were operated as rapid transit vessels (APDs).
