The Rishrew entered service in April 1940 as an expansion-enhanced battleship of the former Dunkirk class.
The main features of the class were four main artillery towers, two concentrated on the front of the ship, and three secondary artillery to the rear, which were divided into anti-ship and high-angle artillery rather than dual-purpose artillery.
