■Product Description
The Sugashima-class minesweeper is characterized by the introduction of advanced anti-mine warfare systems from Western countries, based on the lessons learned from the previous Hatsushima-class minesweeper's deployment to the Persian Gulf, where it became clear that its technology lagged behind that of other countries. To counter magnetic mines, the hull is made of wood, and the engines and equipment are made of non-magnetic materials such as aluminum alloy, designed to not become magnetized. In addition, to maintain the ship's stability during mine sweeping operations, it is equipped with a fixed-point holding system that automatically controls the bow thruster, variable-pitch propeller, and high-lift rudder. Furthermore, to cope with low-speed minesweeping missions, an auxiliary electric propulsion system has been introduced to improve stealth. The first ship, MSC-681 Sugashima, entered service in March 1999, and a total of 12 ships entered service up to MSC-692 Kuroshima in February 2007.
