Asashimo was the 16th ship of the Yugumo-class destroyers, an improved version of the Kagerō-class destroyers, and entered service in March 1944. During the Battle of Cape Bōsō in Operation Ten-Go in April 1945, she withdrew from the fleet due to engine failure and was heavily damaged and sunk by an attack by aircraft from the US Navy task force while operating alone.
