Oura Church is a church located in Nagasaki City, and its official name is the Church of the Twenty-Six Japanese Martyrs.
It is the oldest existing Christian building in Japan, built in 1865.
It was built for foreign residents in the Nagasaki settlement, which was created in conjunction with the opening of Japan to the world at the end of the Edo period.
It was designated a National Treasure by the Ministry of Education in 1933 (Showa 8).
After the restoration of damage caused by the atomic bomb was completed, it was re-designated as a National Treasure by the Cultural Properties Protection Committee on March 31, 1953.
In addition, in June 2018 (Heisei 30), the "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" were registered as a World Cultural Heritage site.
