The F9F-2 Panther was Grumman's first jet fighter and the first jet carrier-based fighter to see combat in the United States Navy.
During the Korean War, it played a central role in attacks against Communist ground forces as part of the carrier task force, and the Panther was also the first U.S. Navy aircraft to shoot down a jet fighter.
Derivatives include the F9F-2P, a photographic reconnaissance version, and the F9F-5, which has been fitted with a J48-P-4 engine.
