[The Battle of the Atlantic as Told Through Enhanced Anti-Aircraft Armament]
The Z-class destroyers, the mainstay of the German Navy, are known for their fierce battles against the British fleet off Narvik in northern Norway during World War II, and for accompanying the battlecruiser Scharnhorst on its final sortie. The Type 36A and Type 36A Combat-Ready had their main guns replaced from the previous 12.7cm guns to 15cm guns, and Z37, 38, and 39, in particular, boasted heavy armament, equipped with twin 15cm gun turrets at the bow. In 1944, an anti-aircraft armament enhancement measure known as the Barbara modification was considered and implemented sequentially. Amidst the disadvantaged German Navy, they continued to fight valiantly against the powerful British fleet until the very end.
