The Fletcher-class destroyers, with a standard displacement exceeding 2,000 tons, were masterpieces of the US Navy, with 175 ships of the same type built during World War II. Built between 1942 and 1944, they were deployed to both the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets as the main destroyers of the US Navy, contributing to the Allied victory. One of these Fletcher-class ships was the DD797 Cushing, which entered service in 1944. The Cushing is a later model that was based on combat experience and featured enhanced armament against air attacks and a square bridge for better visibility. It was equipped with five 12.7cm guns, five 533mm torpedo tubes, five twin 40mm machine guns, and seven single 20mm machine guns. .
