[About the I-58 Late Model]
The I-58 was the last of the Japanese Navy's Type B submarines, which emphasized long-range reconnaissance and attack capabilities. It was completed in September 1944. The I-58 was also used as a carrier for the Kaiten human torpedoes, and sortied four times to Guam and Okinawa. On July 30, 1945, it achieved a major victory by sinking the US Navy heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis with a torpedo off the coast of Palau.
