As a fighter aircraft with excellent high-speed and high-altitude performance, it was deployed on long-range escort missions for bombers heading to mainland Germany. Furthermore, after the appearance of the newer fighter P-51 Mustang, the P-47D Thunderbolt wreaked havoc on ground attack missions, taking advantage of its payload capacity of over 1 ton. During production, the P-47D underwent various improvements, including the replacement of the canopy with a bubble type that offered a wider field of view and an increase in the capacity of the internal fuel tanks. The P-47D Bubble Top demonstrated its capabilities as a tough and well-balanced fighter-bomber, solidifying the reputation of the Thunderbolt.
