■Product Description
[Appearing in 1965, this was the main battle tank representing the Eastern Bloc countries at the time]
The Soviet T-62 tank, which was the first in the world to be equipped with a 115mm smoothbore gun, was first unveiled on May 9, 1965, at the "20th Anniversary of Victory Over Germany Parade" held in Moscow's Red Square, and caused a great shock to military personnel in Western countries. Conventional tank guns have rifling (twist grooves) cut into the inside of the barrel, which allows the projectile to rotate and stabilize its position, but smoothbore guns do not have rifling in the barrel and use projectiles with stabilizing fins. While it's difficult to definitively say whether smoothbore or rifled guns are superior, the T62's main gun, using armor-piercing rounds with fin-stabilized discarding sabots, was said to be capable of penetrating 270mm of armor plate at a range of 2000m with a perpendicular hit. This attracted considerable attention at the time, as 105mm rifled guns were the mainstream main guns for new tanks in Europe and America. The T62 tank was basically an evolution of its predecessors, the T54/55 tanks. While there were noticeable differences such as the increased hull length, the redesigned turret to accommodate the 115mm bonebore gun, the adoption of a high-output engine, and the arrangement of the road wheels, their appearance and configuration were quite similar. There were two types: the T62 (Jinbutsu type) and the T62A, which was equipped with anti-aircraft machine guns and is said to have had its coaxial machine gun strengthened. Both were used as main battle tanks in the Soviet Union, Eastern European countries, and the Middle East.
