The Iowa-class battleships, with a displacement of 45,000 tons, were the largest and last battleships built by the United States Navy during World War II. The second ship of this class was the New Jersey, known by the nickname "Big J". It fought in the Pacific theater from early 1944, but the development of aircraft drastically changed the nature of naval warfare, and it was retired from the front lines as early as 1948. In the Korean War and the Vietnam War, expectations were placed on its powerful gunnery, and it returned to active service twice, but in 1969 it was placed back into reserve. It was incorporated into the fleet. However, in 1981, as part of President Reagan's naval strengthening plan, it was proposed to modernize and return four Iowa-class battleships to active service, and the USS New Jersey was chosen as the first ship. For its return, it was equipped with state-of-the-art armament such as Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Vulcan Phalanx, and its electronic equipment such as radar and ECM was also strengthened. It served as a guided-missile battleship until its decommissioning in 1991. After being decommissioned in 1995, the USS New Jersey was moved to Philadelphia and remains there today as a floating museum. ■Product Specifications
