The Ilyushin IL-2 Sturmovik is a representative ground attack aircraft of the Soviet army during World War II. More than 36,000 units were mass-produced by the end of the war, the most in military aircraft history. Production of the single-seat version began in March 1941, and a two-seat version with an additional swivel machine gun at the rear was introduced to counter German aircraft interception. Subsequently, an improved version appeared with the sweep angle of the outer wings changed from the conventional 5 degrees to 15 degrees. It inflicted devastating damage on German tank units from low altitude, and together with the T-34 tank, it sealed the victory for the Soviet army.
