[About the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt]
The Thunderbolt was a heavyweight fighter aircraft representative of the United States Army Air Corps. Equipped with a 2000-horsepower engine, exhaust turbine supercharger, and heavy armament, it wreaked havoc in long-range escort missions and ground attack missions. Among them, the early production models, with a slightly tapered upper fuselage from the canopy to the tail, were called "Razorbacks." The beer barrel-like style was created to house the exhaust turbine supercharger. The exhaust duct extending from the engine passed through the lower belly of the fuselage and was led to the turbine at the tail, where the air was compressed. This provided the engine with power that did not diminish even at high altitudes.
