[A revolutionary third-generation Western tank born in France]
Among the main battle tanks of Western countries, known as the third generation after the war, the French main battle tank, the Leclerc, adopted many advanced features for its time. Thanks to the vehicle electronic system that was installed ahead of other countries, all of the tank's main functions were computer-controlled. The vehicle's position and status could be transmitted in real time to friendly vehicles and headquarters. The turret, composed of smooth lines, was equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun and automatic loader developed in France, and it was possible to engage six targets within 35 seconds even while moving. In addition, the armor plates were modular and replaceable, making repairs and modifications easy. The 132 vehicles completed by 1996 were called Series 1, followed by Series 2 from 1997, which featured improvements to various parts, such as the installation of a large air conditioning unit for the computer on the top of the turret. 178 vehicles were produced by 2003.
