The Type 1 Self-Propelled Gun was a self-propelled gun based on the chassis of the Japanese Army's main battle tank, the Type 97 medium tank, and equipped with a powerful 75mm field gun. The main gun could penetrate up to 85mm of armor plate at a range of 1,000m. The fighting compartment was open-topped but had a 50mm thick armor plate on the front. Approximately 140 units were produced from 1943 until the end of the war and deployed to the mobile artillery regiments of tank divisions. Four units belonging to the 2nd Tank Division, which safely arrived in the Philippines, met the American forces that landed on Luzon Island in January 1945, and continued to fight tenaciously, destroying M4 Sherman tanks through clever camouflage and ambush attacks while moving from firing position to firing position.
