【The French Rocket that Shined in the Rally Scene】 The Renault 5 Turbo was developed as a machine for the World Rally Championship (WRC), based on Renault's front-wheel-drive mass-market car, the 5 (Cinq). It was equipped with a 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine and a turbocharger honed in sports car racing. Along with a five-speed transmission, it was mid-mounted where the rear seats originally were. The suspension was a reinforced double wishbone independent suspension on all four wheels. The three-door hatchback body used fiberglass and aluminum for most of the parts, such as the roof, doors, and hood, to reduce weight, keeping the vehicle weight down to 850-900 kg. In addition, large overfenders, an air dam skirt integrated with the bumper, and a spoiler at the rear of the roof were fitted, transforming it into an imposing appearance. The works machine won the opening round of the 1981 WRC and continued to show its dominance in various rallies thereafter. Its high-performance driving has been deeply etched in the memories of fans.
