Released in 1980, the XJ400 featured a newly designed air-cooled DOHC 4-cylinder engine with the generator positioned behind the cylinder to reduce engine width. This engine was mounted on a luxurious body equipped with double disc brakes on the front, double horns, and the class's first fuel gauge and voltmeter.
