The "Taiyo" was initially completed as the NYK Line passenger ship "Kasuga Maru," but was requisitioned and commissioned as the first ship of a special aircraft carrier converted from a merchant ship. Although it did not play a prominent role in naval battles, it played an active role in transporting troops and aircraft, and was a ship that supported the front lines.
