【Ship history】
Completed on December 29, 1942, at Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard as the third ship of the Akizuki-class anti-aircraft destroyers equipped with long 10cm guns. After completion, the 61st Destroyer Division was formed with the four ships Akizuki, Suzutsuki, Hatsuzuki, and Wakatsuki. Suzutsuki's first battle was on March 22, 1943, on a mission to transport equipment for an air base. On May 22, upon completing this mission and returning to the mainland, she escorted the battleship Musashi back to Yokosuka. After that, she was engaged in convoy escort and transport operations. In 1944, she suffered heavy damage twice from torpedo attacks by American submarines, which severed her bow, but each time she was repaired and returned to the front lines, demonstrating her strong military fortune. On April 6, 1945, Suzutsuki participated in Operation Ten-Go, a special surface attack operation against the Yamato, and, along with Fuyutsuki, defended the battleship Yamato. Suzutsuki provided anti-aircraft fire to defend the Yamato, but was subjected to a fierce attack by American aircraft. This attack resulted in heavy damage, including the complete destruction of the bridge and severed damage to the engine room and the forward part of the hull, rendering her immobile. After the naval battle, Suzutsuki was thought to have been sunk, but it managed to return to Sasebo by moving in reverse and was hastily brought into dry dock. However, as soon as it entered the dry dock, it sank as if it had run out of power while being drained, a very close call. When it was repaired at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal, its bridge was changed to a simple rectangular structure and it was converted into an anti-aircraft gun battery without power. During the Sasebo air raid after this conversion into an anti-aircraft gun battery, it managed to shoot down one attacking P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Suzutsuki remained an anti-aircraft gun battery until the end of the war, but after the war, the structures above the hull were removed and, along with its sister ship Fuyutsuki, it became a breakwater at Wakamatsu Port in Fukuoka Prefecture.
