【Ship history】
The Washington Naval Treaty thwarted the realization of the Eight-Eight Fleet, and the Japanese Navy was further forced into a disadvantageous position with only 60% of the capital ships possessed by the United States. With the idea of compensating for this disadvantage with other ship types, attention was focused on the Type A cruiser, a type of ship with a displacement of 10,000 tons or less, which had no particular restrictions on the number of ships it could possess, and which could be equipped with the largest 8-inch caliber guns among auxiliary ships. The policy was to build a large number of these Type A cruisers to cover the inferiority of the main battleship force. Following this policy, four Myoko-class cruisers were built with a displacement of 10,000 tons, just within the treaty limit, equipped with 10 20 cm (7.9 inch) guns and 8 torpedo tubes. However, since the American and British Type A cruisers of the same class were equipped with 8-inch (20.3 cm) caliber guns as stipulated by the treaty, it was decided that subsequent ships would be equipped with 8-inch guns to improve the firepower of the naval guns and torpedo tubes to enhance their offensive capabilities. These were the Takao-class cruisers.
