The M4 medium tank is a 30-ton class medium tank developed and manufactured in the United States during World War II, boasting high mobility and firepower. The M4A1 is a type with a cast one-piece upper hull that began mass production in February 1942. The M4A1, equipped with the same air-cooled radial engine as the M4, had less interior space compared to the M4's welded steel hull, but its rounded hull shape provided good ballistic protection. The M4A1(76)W, a later model hull with a wet ammunition storage and a T23 turret equipped with a 76mm gun, entered combat in July 1944. The M51 was a vehicle operated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that featured a later model M4A1 cast hull with a turret equipped with a shortened barrel version of the CN-105-F1 56-caliber 105mm gun. The first mass-produced model equipped with a gasoline engine was called the Degem Alef (Type A).
