■Product Description
The M247 Sergeant York is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun whose development began in the late 1970s in the United States as a replacement for the M163 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. Witnessing the effectiveness of the Soviet ZSU-23-4 Shilka in the 1973 Fourth Arab-Israeli War, the U.S. Army began research on a new anti-aircraft tank in 1977 under the designation "DIVAD" (Division Air Defense). In response to the U.S. Army's requirements, several companies, including Ford Aerospace, submitted basic designs for the DIVAD using the M48A3 tank chassis, and ultimately the U.S. Army signed contracts with General Dynamics and Ford Aerospace to produce prototype vehicles. After testing of the prototype vehicles from both companies was completed, the U.S. Army adopted Ford Aerospace's prototype vehicle as the official designation M247 and also gave it the nickname "Sergeant York". Although testing of the M247 continued, in the 1990s, the need for anti-aircraft tanks itself began to be questioned within the U.S. Army, and despite nearly 50 M247s being completed, they were never deployed.
