The M1 was adopted in 1980, and the M1A1, introduced from 1985, further enlarged the previous 105mm rifled gun to a 120mm smoothbore gun. The M1A2 further enhanced its defensive capabilities. SEP stands for System Enhanced Package, and from 1999 onwards, it was used to upgrade older M1 and M1A1 models.
TUSK I (Tank Urban Survival Kit) is a kit adapted for urban warfare and is equipped with armor tiles, shields around hatches, etc. TUSK II added tile-shaped armor tiles.
It is said to have been deployed in combat during the 1991 Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War, and the 2009 Afghanistan War. The M1A2 SEP TUSK I, used in Iraq, was equipped with explosive reactive armor tiles, a weapon called CSAMM, and had shields added around the loader's hatch and machine gun to adapt to combat in urban and city environments. The TUSK II was a type also used in Iraq, with additional tile-shaped explosive reactive armor tiles. The turret was also raised to avoid interference with these tiles, and the position of the smoke grenade launcher and its storage compartment was also raised.
