The Yankee-class was planned as a successor class to the Hotel-class nuclear submarine and was a nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) operated by the Soviet Navy. The name Yankee-class comes from the NATO code name, and 34 ships were commissioned between 1967 and 1972. Unlike the R-13 of the Hotel-class, this class did not need to surface and was superior in that it could launch submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) from underwater. However, the range of the R-27\/RSM-25 missiles it carried was short at 2,000 km, and it had to move to a place where the enemy had air superiority and control of the sea. This class of submarine was designed based on various documents obtained through Soviet intelligence activities regarding the George Washington-class strategic nuclear submarine, and therefore has an appearance similar to the American George Washington-class strategic nuclear submarine.
