Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Destroyer Murasame
The Murasame was laid down in 1993 as a 4,400-ton destroyer and entered service in 1996. Its homeport is Yokosuka, and it was assigned to the 48th Destroyer Division of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla.
The hull was designed to enhance aircraft operational capabilities and improve habitability, and the elongated shape of the hull reduced sailing noise and improved seaworthiness and wave-breaking ability. In addition, the hull and superstructure are sloped as a countermeasure against radar. A short-range surface-to-air missile vertical launcher is positioned between the central funnels, and it is also capable of operating Sea Sparrow missiles. The main armament consists of one 76mm single rapid-fire gun and two 20mm autocannons. It is equipped with Type 90 ship-to-ship guided missiles, as well as anti-submarine weapons and 324mm triple torpedo tubes. It is equipped with one SH-60J or SH-60k helicopter as its onboard helicopter.
Nine second-generation general-purpose destroyers, with Murasame as the lead ship, were built from 1991 to 1998.
