The Gymnath was the French Navy's first electric propulsion submarine, launched in 1888. The name Gymnath comes from the French word Gymnotidae, meaning a type of electric eel. Equipped with 540 alkaline batteries at launch, and powered by a 55-horsepower electric motor, it could cruise on the surface at a maximum speed of 8 knots. It was equipped with a periscope and gyrocompass, and armament consisted of two 355mm torpedoes. After more than 2000 dives, the Gymnath ran aground and was damaged in 1907. It was placed in dry dock, but flooding occurred because a valve was left open during dry dock entry. Because this accident made repairs seem difficult, it was sold for scrap in 1911. The kit includes photo-etched parts and a display stand.
