At that time in Europe, in order to showcase their technological capabilities, aircraft engine manufacturers themselves independently hosted air races in which only aircraft equipped with their own engines competed. The Bavarian Aircraft Works (BFW), to which Willy Messerschmitt belonged, designed the M.23 to be able to be equipped with various engines in order to participate in races held by each engine manufacturer, and won many prestigious races by participating in multiple races.
