The prototype XA2D, which made its first flight in 1950, used parts from the A-1 Skyraider, such as the tail, but the fuselage and wings were redesigned due to engine changes and other modifications. Compared to the A-1, it was recognized as having significantly improved performance, and more than 300 units were ordered. However, due to the unreliability of the engine caused by its complex structure, the Navy canceled the order in 1952, and it never entered service.
