The Nordenfeld IV was a submarine developed and manufactured for the Russian Imperial Navy by Swedish inventor Thorsten Nordenfeld and British inventor George Garrett. Launched in 1887, the submarine was purchased by the Russian Empire, but ran aground off the Jutland Peninsula on its way to Russia, and Russia refused to pay for it, so it was subsequently dismantled. Although the crew had to shut down the boilers and retract the smokestack when submerged, the submarine could store steam in a steam accumulator tank while on the surface and use it to power the engine when submerged, allowing it to travel underwater for short periods. The kit includes photo-etched parts.
