In the early 1940s, Martin Aircraft Corporation produced the XBTM-1 prototype in response to the US Navy's request for a multi-role bomber development plan. A development contract was signed in 1944, and the aircraft made its first flight in August of the same year. Deployed to units as the AM-1 in 1948, this single-engine aircraft was capable of carrying a payload of 4,830 kg, the largest at the time. Pilots were impressed by its payload capacity and nicknamed it \"Able Mabel,\" a play on the \"AM\" in its designation.
