■Product Description
Atago was the second ship of the Takao-class heavy cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and its name comes from Mount Atago in Kyoto Prefecture. The ship was laid down in 1927 and completed in 1932. At the naval review the year after its completion, all four Takao-class ships were present, and the Takao-class, including Atago, became widely known to the public. Its imposing, castle-like large bridge made it popular. After undergoing modernization in 1938, it replaced Maya as the flagship of the 2nd Fleet in 1941 and advanced south to prepare for the outbreak of war. After the outbreak of war, it often acted together with Takao, providing landing support and jointly sinking small ships. In May 1942, after completing the delayed replacement of its anti-aircraft guns, it operated in the Aleutian Islands area, participated in the Third Battle of Solomon Islands in November of the same year, and suffered minor damage in the Rabaul air raid in November 1943. After completing repairs, in June 1944, she participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea as the flagship of the vanguard force. In October of the same year, off the coast of Palawan, she was attacked by the submarine USS Darter, hit by four torpedoes, and sunk.
