This is the "Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package 2011," a 1/18 scale handmade model car produced by "EIDOLON (Eidolon Collection)."
This model faithfully reproduces the "Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package," which is a special model of Porsche, the "Porsche 918 Spyder," equipped with an even more spartan performance package.
【Vehicle Description】
As a model that achieves maximum performance and minimum fuel consumption, the Porsche 918 Spyder, a super sports car, was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. In effect, it is the successor to the Carrera GT, a super sports car equipped with a V10 engine that was manufactured from 2003 to 2006, but there is almost no commonality other than being a two-seater sports car with the powertrain mounted in the center of the vehicle. However, it retains the body structure, which combines the powertrain with a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) center monocoque and a CFRP subframe.
The most significant difference between the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder is that while both were pure gasoline engine cars equipped with a 5.8-liter V10 engine, the latter is a hybrid vehicle that combines a 4.6-liter V8 engine from the RS Spyder racing car, which was developed primarily for Le Mans, with a total of three electric motors.
Its performance is astonishing for a production model, with a top speed of 320 km/h, and a lap time of under 7 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany, a benchmark for measuring high performance cars, proving its overwhelming speed not only on the straightaways but also on the opener. In normal driving, it achieves a low fuel consumption of approximately 33 km/liter, which is in line with the concept.
Furthermore, the 'Weissach Package' equipped version was released as a high-performance specification. It is also known for achieving a weight reduction of 40 kg through the use of carbon fiber aero parts and magnesium wheels, and for setting the fastest lap time for a road car at the time, "6 minutes 57 seconds," on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
【Model Description】
With the cooperation of the owner of a "918 Spyder" that still exists in Japan, we were able to create a 3D scan of the actual car. Following Makeup's model-making theory, we aimed for an objective form that scales down the atmosphere of the actual car without unnecessary deformation. The body, which is composed of smooth curves throughout, is a perfect match for CAD design using a 3D scanner.
One of the eye-catching features of the 918 Spyder is the engine hood. The entire surface is covered with a hexagonal honeycomb mesh, allowing the interior to be seen through. The model also matches the actual car, incorporating etched parts with press processing into the mesh area, and the molds visible through the mesh are also expressed in a simple manner.
The headlights and taillights are molded and painted with a resolution close to the limit of 1/18 scale, including the housing and reflector shape, and then a clear cover is attached using injection molding to match the curvature of the body surface.
The magnesium wheels, the most distinctive feature of the "Weissach Package," are made using injection molding to ensure strength, and 3D data was created to be as close to the actual car as possible.
Similarly, the carbon fiber diffuser, which wraps around the rear bumper from below and is a characteristic of Weissach Package equipped vehicles, was also designed to be thin and sharp.
Weissach Package equipped vehicles are luxuriously fitted with numerous carbon fiber parts, many of which are left with the carbon fiber exposed without being painted with the body color, but in this model, carbon fiber pattern decals are applied to these areas, and then a clear coating is applied over them to create an atmosphere just like the actual car.
