About the actual ship
Built in 1943 during World War II as the 14th ship of the Baltimore-class cruisers, the guided-missile cruiser Chicago CG-11 was converted into a guided-missile cruiser equipped with surface-to-air missiles after the war and remained in service until 1980. A major feature after the conversion to a guided-missile cruiser was the unique style of the bridge structure, which was narrow in width and tall. In terms of armament, it was equipped with Talos and Tartar surface-to-air missiles, as well as a 127mm single-barrel gun in 38 caliber. Furthermore, it was equipped with an 8-cell ASROC launcher and 324mm triple torpedo tubes for anti-submarine warfare. After deployment, it served as the flagship of the 3rd Fleet deployed in the Pacific.
About the Model
The model is a 1/700 scale reproduction of the US Navy guided-missile cruiser Chicago (CG-11). The unique style with a slim hull and distinctive narrow, tall bridge is modeled in a finished length of approximately 290mm. It is possible to assemble it as a full-hull model that reproduces the bottom of the hull or a waterline model that reproduces the part above the waterline. The shape of the sponsons on the lower part of the hull is also accurately reproduced using slide molds. The superstructure of the hull accurately models the unique shape of the bridge and funnel, as well as the Talos and Tartar surface-to-air missiles and the 8-cell ASROC launcher in detail. Furthermore, the radar and railings, reproduced with photo-etched parts, enhance the realism of the finished product. The Chicago, with its distinctive style among Cold War-era cruisers, is a ship that deserves attention as a model. Dragon has also modeled the Cold War-era guided-missile cruiser USS Arkansas in the same scale. It would be fun to build them together. ■Product Specifications Manufacturer: DRAGON Item No: DR7121 Scale: 1/700 JAN: 4545782119893 ■Notes Release date, price, product name, etc. may change without notice.
