About the actual aircraft
The Saab Viggen is a jet fighter that was independently developed, deployed, and operated by Sweden in Northern Europe. Development started in 1961 as a successor to the Draken. After successfully making its first flight in 1967, it was deployed and put into operation from 1971. The aircraft's shape is equipped with canards on both sides of the cockpit, and the main wings are delta wings. The aircraft was powered by a single Plato & Whitney JT8D-22 engine. It achieved a top speed of Mach 2.1 while also boasting STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capabilities, allowing for takeoffs and landings on short runways. In addition to a fixed armament of a 30mm Oerlikon KCA cannon, it was also capable of operating RB71 Skyflash short-range air-to-air missiles. A total of over 300 aircraft were produced. In 2002, the 1st Squadron of the 10th Wing created a commemorative painted aircraft as a memorial to the dissolution of the wing. The Viggen, painted entirely red, was called the 'Red Viggen', and the squadron's ghost markings were painted in white on the nose and wings. The aircraft is still on display at a museum in Sweden.
About the Model
