About the actual car
In 1994, a new type of touring car racing called New Touring began, replacing the previous Group A regulations.
In accordance with these regulations, the JTCC touring car race also started in Japan in 1994.
Among the overseas manufacturers participating, the machine that Toyota prepared was the Corona ST191.
It was a machine that had been developed locally for the same regulations race in the UK which started the previous year in 1993, and was further improved.
It was then introduced into the Japanese JTCC.
The Corona's 4-door sedan body had not undergone any major changes to its appearance, and a 1998cc 4-cylinder engine was mounted transversely in the front.
The suspension and other parts were also tuned, and it exhibited high competitiveness.
In the 1994 race, 5 cars from 3 teams participated.
It won the Suzuka 500km and competed for the championship until the final race.
